Heavy thick-wall pipe die cylinder forging is a specialized metalworking process designed to produce high-integrity, large-diameter cylindrical components used primarily in the manufacturing of seamless steel pipes. These die cylinders serve as critical tooling elements in rotary piercing and mandrel mill operations, where they withstand extreme mechanical loads, thermal cycling, and abrasive wear during hot forming of billets into hollow shells.

The forging process begins with selecting premium-grade alloy steels—typically low-alloy chromium-molybdenum or nickel-chromium-molybdenum grades—chosen for their superior strength, toughness, and resistance to thermal fatigue at elevated temperatures. Ingots or large forged blanks are heated to precise austenitizing temperatures and then subjected to multi-directional open-die forging. This controlled deformation ensures uniform grain flow along the cylinder’s radial and axial directions, eliminates internal voids, and refines microstructure—key factors in preventing premature cracking or distortion under service conditions.

Due to the demanding geometry and wall thickness—often exceeding 300 mm—process planning emphasizes careful temperature management, incremental reduction ratios, and strategic cooling protocols. Post-forging heat treatment, including normalizing, quenching, and tempering, is precisely calibrated to achieve target hardness (typically 240–280 HB) while maintaining dimensional stability and residual stress balance. Final machining involves precision boring, turning, and surface hardening of the inner bore to enhance wear resistance against hot steel contact.
