Precision-turned heavy steel tube

“Precision-turned heavy steel tube” typically refers to heavy-duty seamless steel tubes that have undergone precision turning, with final dimensions, tolerances, and surface quality meeting very high standards. These products are very common in industrial applications, particularly in the manufacture of components with high performance requirements, such as hydraulic cylinder barrels.

Common Materials and Grades

The choice of material for these steel tubes depends on the end application. Below are several typical grades and their applicable scenarios:

Tubes for precision hydraulic cylinder barrels: Common grades include E355 (European standard), ST52 (German standard), and SAE 1026 (U.S. standard). These materials offer high strength and good machinability, making them an ideal choice for hydraulic systems.

Precision Steel Tubes for Automotive Applications: Used to manufacture components such as drive shafts and shock absorbers, the range of commonly used grades is extensive, including 10# to 45# carbon steel, as well as alloy steels such as 16Mn, 20Cr, and 15CrMo/35CrMo.

Precision Steel Tubes for Bearings: To meet high hardness and wear resistance requirements, high-purity bearing steels such as GCr15 are selected.

Dimension Range

The dimension range for precision-turned heavy-duty steel tubes is very broad, depending on machining equipment and process requirements. Common specifications are as follows:

Outer Diameter (OD): 20 mm – 325 mm General range. Automotive tubes are smaller, ranging from Φ16 mm to Φ114 mm.

Wall Thickness (WT): 1 mm – 17 mm General range. Automotive tubes have wall thicknesses of 1.0–10.0 mm.

Inner Diameter Tolerance: Up to H8 grade, or even H7/H9 High precision requirements; this is a key indicator of their “precision” characteristics.

Inner Surface Roughness: Ra ≤ 0.25 μm Achieved through special processes (such as roll polishing), which can yield better results than traditional honed tubes.

Main Application Areas

These precision steel tubes are primarily used in fields with strict requirements for dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and mechanical properties:

Hydraulic systems: This is the most common application. Precision-turned tubes (especially those that have undergone roll polishing) are widely used as hydraulic cylinder barrels; their smooth inner walls effectively reduce wear on piston seals and extend equipment lifespan.

Automotive Manufacturing: Used in the manufacture of critical components such as drive shafts, shock absorbers, and steering links, which require good fatigue resistance, wear resistance, and dimensional consistency.

Bearing Manufacturing: Used as the base material for bearing inner rings; their machining precision directly determines the bearing’s rotational accuracy and service life.

General Machinery: Used for structural and pressure components in construction machinery and energy equipment.
