General Engineering Steel: C45, 1045 (UNS G10450), Good strength and machinability. Used for general-purpose hydraulic cylinders and less demanding mechanical applications.

High-Strength Alloy Steel: 4140, 42CrMo4, 4340, 34CrNiMo6, Excellent strength, toughness, and wear resistance. The most common choice for heavy-duty hydraulic systems, construction equipment, and mining machinery.

Case-Hardening Steel: 18CrNiMo7-6, 17CrNiMo6, High core toughness and a wear-resistant surface after carburizing. Used in gears and high-load components where surface durability is critical.

Stainless Steel: 304L, 316L, Excellent corrosion resistance. Chosen for hydraulic applications in marine environments, chemical processing, or where moisture is present.

Specialty/High-Temperature: 1.4903 (X10CrMoVNb9-1), 31CrMoV9, 40CrNiMoA, Designed for extreme conditions, offering high-temperature stability and specialized performance.

Typical Size Range

Forged cylinder sleeves are typically custom-made to order, but they can be produced across a wide spectrum of dimensions. Here are some general size ranges from manufacturers:

Outer Diameter (OD): Can range from as small as 100 mm up to 800 mm. Smaller OD products are also possible based on specific customer requirements.

Length: Typically ranges up to about 1240 mm. Some manufacturers specify a general capability up to 500 mm in length.

Wall Thickness: Can be customized, with one source listing a range of 10 mm to 100 mm.

Machining Tolerance: Forged sleeves can be machined to very tight tolerances, sometimes as precise as ±0.01 mm.

Applications

The high strength and reliability of forged sleeves make them essential across many demanding industries:

Hydraulic Systems: Used as the cylinder barrel in heavy machinery, construction equipment (e.g., excavators), and industrial presses.

Automotive and Engines: Utilized in high-performance engines, truck, and off-highway vehicle components to protect cylinder bores.

Oil & Gas and Marine: Employed in offshore drilling rigs and ship propulsion systems, where components must withstand high stress and, often, corrosive saltwater environments.

Renewable Energy & Aerospace: Found in wind turbine actuators and aerospace testing rigs, where fatigue resistance and reliability under cyclic loads are critical
