How to Order Custom Forged Rings from Drawings
A clear request for quotation (RFQ) helps a supplier evaluate a custom forged ring without repeated clarification. Drawings are essential, but the most useful inquiry also states the material, product condition, inspection scope, quantity, and delivery requirements.
1. Provide the Latest Drawing
Send a dimensioned 2D drawing and, when available, a 3D CAD model. Make sure the revision is clear. Identify critical dimensions, geometric tolerances, surface finishes, grooves, holes, chamfers, and any features that affect assembly or sealing.
2. Specify the Material Completely
Include the exact grade and governing standard. Where relevant, state the product form and required heat-treatment condition. Broad terms such as “stainless steel” or “nickel alloy” are not enough to confirm availability, mechanical properties, or price.
3. Distinguish Blank and Finished Dimensions
State whether you need a forged blank, rough-machined ring, or fully machined component. If dimensions on the drawing are finished dimensions, explain whether the supplier should calculate the forging allowance. The blank route affects material weight, yield, machining time, and total cost.
4. Define Tolerances and Surface Finish
Call out critical OD, ID, thickness, flatness, runout, concentricity, and surface-finish requirements. Avoid applying tight tolerances to every dimension unless necessary. The supplier should review tolerances against the component size, material, machining route, and inspection method.
5. List Heat Treatment and Inspection
Identify required heat treatment, material certificates, mechanical testing, hardness, non-destructive testing, dimensional reports, and third-party inspection. Include the applicable standards and acceptance criteria. Requirements that are omitted from the RFQ can cause price differences or schedule changes later.
6. Confirm Quantity and Delivery
State the order quantity, whether repeat orders are expected, required delivery date, destination, packaging, and Incoterms such as EXW or FOB where applicable. Shipping and export packing should be separated from the ex-works manufacturing price if you need to compare costs accurately.
7. Ask for a Clear Quotation
A useful quotation should identify the quoted material, supply condition, machining scope, documentation, price basis, lead time, and exclusions. If alternatives are acceptable, ask for separate pricing for the forging blank and finished machining so you can compare the options.
