Thick-walled cylindrical forgings are blanks used to manufacture core components for high-pressure vessels or pipelines; their materials, dimensions, and applications are primarily concentrated in heavy industrial sectors such as nuclear power and petrochemicals.

Alloy steels with high strength, good toughness, and heat resistance are typically selected for thick-walled cylindrical forgings.

Low-alloy steels: 4130, 4140, 4340, 42CrMo4 These steels offer good overall mechanical properties and hardenability, making them widely used.

Steels for nuclear power: SA508-3, SA350 LF5 C1.1 Designed specifically for critical equipment such as nuclear reactor pressure vessels, these steels must meet strict requirements for low-temperature toughness and radiation resistance.

Heat-Resistant Steel: 2.25Cr-1MoNiNb Possesses excellent creep resistance and oxidation resistance at high temperatures, making it suitable for environments with high operating temperatures, such as steam generators.

Dimension Range

The dimensions of thick-walled forgings primarily depend on the specifications of the final equipment. The following are common dimensional parameters compiled based on search results.

Wall Thickness: Typically greater than 80 mm; some cases show wall thicknesses as high as 290 mm.

Outer Diameter: The range is very broad, from as small as 650–900 mm to over 4,000 mm.

Length: Can be customized as needed; some examples reach lengths of 2,500–6,100 mm.

Weight: A single forging can weigh up to 30 metric tons or more.

Core Application Areas

Thick-walled cylindrical forgings serve as critical foundational components for many major pieces of technical equipment.

Nuclear Power Industry: Used in the manufacture of core equipment such as nuclear reactor pressure vessels and steam generators; this is one of the fields with the highest concentration of applications and the most stringent technical requirements.

Petrochemical Industry: Used in the manufacture of large-scale pressure vessels, hydrogenation reactors, and similar equipment, which typically operate under high-temperature, high-pressure, and hydrogen-rich conditions.

Other Heavy-Duty Equipment: Also used in construction machinery, hydraulic systems, and concrete pipe pile molds—applications that require withstanding heavy loads and impacts.

We also provide forging blanks and CNC precision machining services for our clients, covering industries such as energy, petrochemicals, steel, engineering machinery, plastics, prevention and control, hydraulics, healthcare, and food. Please feel free to send us drawings for inquiries.
