ASTM A516 Grade 70 Seamless Rolled Rings: Carbon Steel for Vessel Components
ASTM A516 Grade 70 is a carbon steel plate grade commonly associated with pressure-vessel service. When a project requires an annular component, the purchaser must verify that the material form and product specification permit the proposed seamless rolled ring route. A plate designation should not be assumed to cover every forged or rolled product form without the relevant material standard and design approval.
Confirm the material form first
Start by checking the drawing, code calculation and purchase specification. If the project names A516 Grade 70, clarify whether the ring is to be produced from plate, forged stock or another approved product route, and which specification governs the finished product. The engineering authority should approve any change in product form or material designation.
Ring manufacture versus plate fabrication
A seamless rolled ring is expanded from a preform through ring-rolling operations; it is not a plate strip rolled into a circle and welded. The distinction affects material continuity, inspection and design documentation. If a welded ring is acceptable, it should be treated as a separately approved construction route with its own welding and examination requirements.
Geometry, tolerances and finish machining
For quotation, provide OD, ID, thickness, radial width, quantity and a dimensioned drawing. Identify finished and rough dimensions separately. Pressure-equipment rings may require precise flange faces, bolt-related features, bore geometry and controlled machining allowances. The supplier should know which surfaces are critical to assembly and which tolerances are code-related.
Quality plan for vessel-related rings
Define chemistry, tensile properties, heat treatment, traceability, dimensional checks and required NDT. The test method, extent and acceptance level should be written into the purchase order. Include the applicable code, material-form approval, certificate type and delivery requirements when requesting a quotation.
